Charbel Daniel is President and CEO of Northwood, one of Atlantic Canada's largest not-for-profit continuing care organizations. A former paramedic, he spent more than 16 years with Medavie Health Services, including as Executive Director of Provincial Operations at Emergency Medical Care Inc., Nova Scotia's ambulance provider, and as Chief Operating Officer of MedLife USA. The child of immigrants who fled war-torn Lebanon, he leads with a focus on dignity, resilience and community-centred care. He is the author of The Problem with Solutions and The Problem with Problems (November 2026), and a keynote speaker on the distinction at the heart of both books: some things are problems, and some are realities. He chairs the Affordable Housing Association of Nova Scotia and serves on the boards of the Canadian Home Care Association and Hereditary Angioedema Canada.
Five questions he is ready for
- You say some things are realities, not problems. How do you tell the difference in the moment, when everyone in the room wants a fix?
- When your son Lucas was diagnosed with hereditary angioedema, what did it teach a former paramedic and a CEO about the limits of fixing?
- Early in your career, a team member was written off for years as “just who they are.” What changed when you finally told them the truth?
- You visited a dementia village in the Netherlands and could not tell the staff from the residents. What should continuing care learn from it?
- As Canada ages, where does the health system most often mistake a reality for a problem?
